For my Holiday Gift-Guide Roundup, I gave you guys a look at the TEMPTU Signature Starter Kit. Well, I loved the kit so much that I thought it definitely warranted a full-sized review from me. I know a lot of you are already seasoned pros in the world of airbrush makeup but for the few of you that might be noobs like I was prior to trying this set, this one’s for you!

This set comes with TEMPTU’s AIRbrush Makeup System 2.0 (the one shown in the photos came with an LE Gelaskin designed by Patricia Field but the regular set is all black), 1 AIRpod Foundation (in your choice of shade), 1 AIRpod Blush (your choice of shade), and 1 AIRpod Highlighter (in your choice of shade). As if that weren’t enough, the set is also filled with bonus goodies–there’s a handy 3 Pod Stand to store your makeup pods, a Signature Clear Makeup Bag, and (one of my favorite perks) a voucher for a free foundation AIRpod refill! Love that!

Thankfully–daunting as the whole business of airbrush makeup may seem–the set is really easy to put together and even easier to use! The TEMPTU makeup pods are quite nifty too! On each pod, there’s a chrome-like cap that comes off and reveals the plastic inside you see in the photo below. All you have to do is unplug the black rubber stopper, slide the open end into the nozzle/gun to attach, plug in the machine and you’re ready to go!

There are helpful little instructions detailing exactly how to put everything together and what you need to do before using the TEMPTU set (they also have a whole “learn” section on their website dedicated to helping you navigate everything from putting together the kit to techniques on how to properly [and professionally] apply highlighter and bronzer. There’s even a video tutorial on how to cover a birthmark! Check them all out here).

I received 4 shades to review: foundation in Beige, highlighter in Champagne, and blush in Hot Pink and Pale Pink. Beige is a neutral to cool-leaning medium peachy-beige. But despite this, it actually matches my skin tone pretty well as long as I apply a light, even layer all over my skin (which, luckily, isn’t very hard to do with an airbrush machine). If I turn the dial any higher than the recommended 3 o’clock position or hold the nozzle aimed at any one spot too long, the product is applied a bit heavier and is therefore more noticeably not a perfect match for my skin. Thankfully, Warm Beige is the same shade except with a warm yellow undertone, so I think I’ll use my free foundation voucher to pick up that shade.

As for the AIRpod Blushes, I have 2 shades to show you guys: Hot Pink and Pale Pink. Hot Pink is just what you’d expect; it’s a vibrant, neutral pink that’s surprisingly wearable–definitely not as scary as it looks in the pod (at least for bright blush-phobes, like me). Pale Pink, however, was a bit of a surprise. In the heavy swatch, you can see how brown Pale Pink appears. Not only that but you can see that it’s not exactly pale either. Still, despite the misnomer and as evident from the blended swatch, Pale Pink is quite flattering on the skin as one of those neutral blush/bronzer type products in the vein of Exposed or Sweetpea. It’s just brown enough that you don’t really need a separate bronzer–especially in the winter–but pink enough that it brightens up the face and gives a pretty pop of color to the cheek.

Champagne is a beautiful highlighter that can get a bit frosty if used with a heavy hand (as seen in the swatches below). But when used sparingly and blended, you can see that it provides just the right amount of glimmer and glow. It truly is a beautiful highlighter that looks absolutely incredible on the cheeks and on the inner tear-duct part of the eyes!

I’ll admit that it did take a few tries for me to get the hang of spraying makeup onto my face but once you find the perfect distance to hold the wand away from your face (they suggest 4-6 inches but I prefer about 8 inches or so) and air pressure (turn the dial clockwise to increase the pressure for more intense color/coverage), you can do your entire face in a snap. If you’re really good at it, you can just spray and go but I do think I need to refine my technique a bit still and am always sure to blend everything lightly after applying.

Once I do though, my skin looks crazy good! Seriously, it looks flawless and trust me, my skin sans makeup is most definitely not flawless. I can see now what all the hype was about! If I had to nitpick about anything, I will say that the makeup does have a pretty weird, plastic-y scent to it that lingers for quite a while. It’s not foul or anything, just a bit annoying maybe. But I suppose that’s a small price to pay for flawless-looking skin. :P

The finish is very natural–not dewy and not matte. I do have to blot regularly (like I would with any other foundation) but it lasts for hours with no retouching necessary.

I’ve also heard that the AIRpods don’t last very long…which makes sense, considering the amount of product within each one. I understand the pods have to be on the small side to fit but I do wish the refill pods were a bit cheaper. Most foundations contain on average about 1 fl. oz. of product and TEMPTU’s only contains 0.41 yet still costs $45. But in my mind, I’d think you’d have to use a lot less product than you would with a regular foundation…so I’ll keep using these guys and update this post/let you guys know about how long one AIRpod foundation lasts for me with regular use.

Other than that, though, this set is pretty perfect–it’s everything an airbrush newbie could want and more! Plus, TEMPTU has a seriously impressive collection of shades available to choose from–there’s 9 blushes, 6 highlighters, and 12 foundation shades. There are also more shades and finishes available to purchase separately too! All in all, I’d say if you’ve been curious about airbrush makeup for a long time but haven’t taken the plunge for whatever reason: DO IT. There’s absolutely nothing to lose except another day without flawless, Photoshop-like skin!
